It's been a busy month — a lot of work has gone into HyperXTalk behind the scenes, and the website has grown quite a bit too. Here's a roundup of what's been happening.
What's Coming in HyperXTalk 0.9.16
The big headline for Linux users is alternative scripting languages. HyperXTalk on Linux now ships with support for additional scripting languages alongside the native HyperXTalk language. This has been a long-requested feature and it's great to finally have it in the hands of users.
Code folding has landed in the script editor. If you're working with longer scripts, you can now collapse handler and function blocks to keep things manageable. It's one of those small quality-of-life additions that makes a surprisingly big difference day to day.
The backdrop now spans all connected monitors on macOS, Windows, and Linux. If you're running a multi-monitor setup, the backdrop will cover everything — no more gaps between screens.
Speech recognition is now available across all three platforms. On macOS and Windows it hooks into the built-in OS speech recognition, so there's nothing extra to install. Linux users will need Vosk, a lightweight offline speech recognition library, but once that's in place it works the same way everywhere.
WebKitGTK is now the web browser widget backend on Linux, which means the browser widget works reliably on most mainstream distros. There are a handful of distros where it doesn't play nicely yet — we're aware of them and will address them in a future update.
Finally, Markdown support has been added to field objects. Fields can now render a subset of Markdown directly, and can also export their content as Markdown. This opens up a lot of possibilities for note-taking apps, documentation tools, and anything else where formatted text matters.
On the Website
Since the last post, the site has gained a Tutorials section with twelve lessons covering HyperXTalk from the ground up, and a community Snippets library where you can browse, search, and submit ready-to-use scripts. Both are under the Learn menu in the navigation.
The snippets library is still young — if you have something useful, please submit it! The more the community contributes, the more useful it becomes for everyone.
